In addition to the routine paperwork, physical
and drug screen, you now have the ability to show
that you meet the "Professional Requirements"
in one of several ways:
1. Show experience (360 days),
2. Complete an approved refresher training course,
or
3. Pass a comprehensive open book exercise.
Many people are unable to show the 360 days experience,
and for them the other two options are important
so they can retain their licenses.
Several schools are now approved to teach renewal
refresher courses, and their certificates are accepted
by the Coast Guard in lieu of experience or exams.
Course prices are generally very reasonable and
you also get the school's assistance with the paperwork.
Even though schooling is the most efficient way
of meeting the requirements, some people may not
be able to attend a course due to scheduling or
location problems. For these people, National Captain's
Institute offers a Renewal Assistance Program (RAP).
In order to use the RAP program, you will need
to get the comprehensive renewal exercise from the
Coast Guard. Answer as many of the questions as
you can, using any reference materials you have
available. If you are sure you passed the test with
the required 90% grade, send it to the Coast Guard.
If you don't think you can pass the test, send
your answer sheets to NCI. We will research the
questions for you, and guarantee that you will be
able to answer the questions with a passing grade.
